Longines

Longines - a company with style

Longines is a Swiss company, like so many other watch manufacturers. Zenith, TAG Heuer, Ulysse Nardin and many other companies are based in Switzerland. The noble and high-quality watches are manufactured in the small inland area, which is 80 percent covered by the Alps, and exported from there all over the world. The company's origins go back to 1832, when three partners founded a watchmaker's workshop in Saint-Imier, which manufactured pocket watches with a spindle escapement. 14 years later, Agassiz took over management of the company and expanded to the USA. The company grew and later Ernest Francillion, Agassiz's nephew, became the new boss.

In 1867 the first 20A movement was made. It was characterized by its bow winding, the lever escapement and the timing mechanism. It also made a name for itself at the world exhibition in Paris. More news was later introduced at the Philadelphia World's Fair. The 20 H clock mechanism, which was patented by Alfred Lugrin in 1878. In 1880 the symbol for Longines was placed in the foreground, a winged hourglass, which has established itself as the brand's symbol to this day. In the course of the 20th century there were numerous different models that have become known beyond the borders of Switzerland.
