"We are going to take an in depth look at the Second generation 5512.
The watch we are going to profile is a 1962 version. The watch can be summarized as a Pointed Crown Guards, Chapter Ring, Gilt Dial with exclamation point."
We will take a closer look at the second generation of the Reference 5512.
The model presented here is a version from 1962. The watch is characterized by the following features: "Pointed Crown Guards," a "Chapter Ring" dial, and a "Gilt" dial with an exclamation-point index.
Case and crown guards of an early 5512; serial number 870xxx from 1962.
Sometime in 1960, Rolex switched from "Square" (angular) crown guards to "Pointed" crown guards on the new Reference 5512.
It is known that only about a dozen examples of the 5512 with square crown guards exist.
Some collectors believe that the pointed crown guards were merely a prototype for the rounded guards that Rolex later introduced—in the mid-1960s—and which are very familiar to us all. Regarding crown guards, the 5512 thus went through the following phases: 1) square guards, 2) pointed guards, 3) rounded guards.
The case of the 5512 is quite large at 39.5 mm, representing an increase in size compared to earlier models (such as the 6536-1), which had a diameter of 38 mm.
