Porsche - the success story with tradition

The history of the Stuttgart car manufacturer Porsche began in 1897. The Lohner-Porsche electric car made its debut at the Paris World Exhibition and Ferdinand Porsche's good reputation was to become a sure-fire success from then on. Innovations after innovations have followed at Porsche since then to this day.

The founding of Porsche

Today the manufacturer is called Dr. Ing.hc F. Porsche Ag. It was founded as a design office by Ferdinand Porsche in 1931. At that time, the company focused on racing cars that were produced for Auto Union, for example. Mr. Porsche was involved in many traditional Volkswagen models, including the VW 38, which is considered to be the forerunner of the Beetle. Some also call this model the Porsche Type 60, which clearly shows the relationship.

In 1947 the leadership changed: Ferry Porsche, the founder's son, took over the helm and made Porsche what it is today. The Porsche 356/1 was the first model that looks similar to today's models. An unmistakably light body and the Porsche coat of arms are descendants of Ferry Porsche.

In 1951 there were further, authoritative evictions. The company has now moved from Schwäbisch-Gmünd to Stuttgart again. From then on, it continued to break away from VW. Own production rooms were created so that parts could be manufactured in-house from now on.

The racing car manufacturer lives up to its name

To make his position and expertise clear, Ferry Porsche relied on success in racing. In the critical year 1951, the Porsche 356 won the Le Mans race, although this victory was only the beginning of the success story. The Porsche Spyder 550 won another victory einheimsen, which was manufactured two years later.

The boss's idea bore fruit: more and more Porsches were on the road all over the world. In the 1960s, Ferry Porsche's son Alexander achieved a historic development: He formulated the design of the legendary Porsche 911.

The rest is history. From then on, one successful model followed the other, with the racing car manufacturer bringing its traditional models to the market in ever better versions. In 1974 the Porsche 911 Turbo took care of it for a stir. 1977 is the Porsche 928 Named Car of the Year - As the only sports car so far.

Five years before the millennium, Porsche is delighting its fans again with the Porsche Boxster roadster . After the turn of the millennium, the most successful model was the Porsche Cayenne , the manufacturer's first SUV.

Porsche today

In 2009 the Porsche Museum made its debut in Stuttgart-Zuffenhausen, the manufacturer's long-established home. The spectacle consumed 100 million euros.

Since the same year, most of the management has been in the hands of the VW Group. Previously, the Stuttgart company's plan was to take over VW. However, increasing debts and disputes meant that this plan could not be realized. In 2009 half belonged to Porsche SE, a holding company founded by the VW Group. The entire business follows in 2012.
