Ferrari

Ferrari - the background of the Italian car manufacturer

The term “Ferrari” is understood by laypeople and professionals to mean an Italian automobile manufacturer of sports cars and Formula 1 cars. The legal seat of the Ferrari company is in Amsterdam and the administrative seat is in the Italian province of Modena in the town of Maranello. The company was founded in 1947 by former racing driver Enzo Ferrari. Until 2016 the company Ferrari belonged to Fiat Chrysler Automobiles with around 80 percent of the company shares.

Ferrari - the impressive history of the Cavallino rampante (rearing horse)

The Ferrari company has its origins in the “Scuderia Ferrari” racing team, which between 1929 and 1938, under the direction of Enzo Ferrari, occasionally competed in very successful car races as the Alfa Romeo factory team. At that time, however, no own automobiles were made. At that time, the logo was already used with recognition value. It is a rearing horse, the "cavallino rampante".

In 1940 the Scuderia was renamed "Auto Avio Costruzioni Ferrari" and in 1943 it moved to Maranello. To this day, the headquarters are in the province of Modena in Maranello. The plant was destroyed in 1944, but rebuilt in 1946.

Ferrari - the first "real" Ferrari sees the light of day

In 1947 the first “real” Ferrari was built. It's the Ferrari 125 C Sport with a 1.5 liter V12 engine. At that time, Ferrari mainly built racing cars for sports car races such as the Mille Miglia. These cars were also sold to customers. Thus, roadworthy vehicles developed that were not predestined for racing. Due to their unusual optical design, Ferrari cars found buyers in the upper classes of wealthy merchants and industrialists who could afford such vehicles.

Ferrari - il cavallino rampante

The brand's emblem is typical of Ferrari: a black rearing horse on a yellow background with the initials “SF” for “Scuderia Ferrari” (Ferrari racing team). The symbol of the horse goes back to the Baron Francesco Baracca. He was an Aeronautica Militare flying ace in World War I. Baron Baracca was shot down on June 19, 1918 after more than 30 successful and victorious aerial battles and declared a national hero. The baron had the horse attached to the planes of his flight group with brush and paint. Another theory that has survived but has not been proven is that Baron Baracca copied the horse from a German pilot who had put the coat of arms of the city of Stuttgart on his plane. The famous German automobile manufacturer Porsche has also incorporated his city coat of arms into his brand.

Ferrari - Enzo Ferrari comes to the cinema

After the box-office hit “Le Mans 1966”, Enzo Ferrari comes to the local cinemas. In spring 2021, filming began on a new Hollywood racing film. The film director "Michael Mann" has an eye on the film about the life of Enzo Ferrari, who was the legendary founder of Scuderia Ferrari. The film will take place in the 1950s and especially in 1957, when the bon vivant Alfonso de Portago raced into the stands in his Ferrari at the famous Mille Miglia. Both the racing driver, his co-driver and nine spectators died. Ferrari was convicted of negligent homicide and acquitted after four years. It is very likely that Enzo Ferrari will be interpreted by Hugh Jackman.
