IWC

The exciting history of IWC Schaffhausen

The American Florentine Ariosto Jones, a watchmaker and engineer by profession, works on the management floor of the renowned watch manufacturer E. Howard & Company. During this time he developed the idea of starting his own watch brand. He wanted to combine modern production processes from the USA with traditional Swiss watchmaking. In Switzerland he met the watch manufacturer Johann Heinrich Moser. In 1868 he founded the International Watch Group on the factory owner's premises. Some time later Jones built his own factory. Due to low demand and the high import duties in the USA at the time, the entrepreneur had to file for bankruptcy six years later. The new owner of the watch factory was the Schaffhausen Handelsbank, which IWC converted into a stock corporation. Another bankruptcy followed just six years later and the company was bought by the Swiss Johannes Rauschenbach. The family ran the company for many years and was successful until the beginning of the quartz crisis. Not only the crisis, but also the rising dollar exchange rate and the gold price, forced the watch manufacturer to sell again. The brand was sold to Germany and changed hands here several times before it was transferred to the Swiss luxury goods group Richemont in 2000 and is still part of its group today. The luxury watch brand is known for many spectacular collections that still fascinate watch lovers to this day.
