The history of the motorboat manufacturer
Robert Braithwaite has always been fond of shipping and boats.
In the 1960s he was an employee of the Friar's Cliff Marine. This company sold a wide variety of boats, including those of the boat builder Owens Cruisers Inc. from America. In 1969 the headquarters of Friar's Cliff Marine changed and the boats were to be manufactured in Poole from now on. Where there are now seven factory buildings and shipyards.
The management of Owens Cruisers did not want to operate its boats in Great Britain. That was the chance for Robert Braithwaite. He bought the rights to the boats from Owens Cruisers.
The brothers Robert and John Braithwaite got together to start their own business in 1969. Today, the company employs more than 2,000 highly qualified professionals to deal with design, engineering and craftsmanship. Years that shaped the Sunseeker boats
The early 1970s made the Braithwaite brothers one of the best-known boat builders in Great Britain. The first boat was named Sovereign 17 and entered the market in 1971. This was followed by Sovereign 20. A year later, it merged with the exhibitors at the Southampton Boat Show. This exhibition brought a lot of new customers with it.
The success remained by their side and with it came new achievements in the sport boat market - as Sports 23 and Daycab 23 showed. Sales and expansion went well. The designer Don Shead made sure that the racing boats got an unmistakable look. The first new type of yacht was born with Offshore 28. A high-performance boat that Europe has never seen before. This is how the Sunseeker company achieved its international label. The style is unmistakable. The company focuses on two very important factors. The pleasure and the power. The 90s gave the boats their own design, which was based on automobiles and provided a soft shape. Thus, longer yachts were created, such as the Renegade 60 with double jet propulsion and high maneuverability. Sunseeker Renegade 60 was proudly presented at the Outhampton Boat Show 1990. Years later, the Sunseeker Predator 80 impressed with its impressive features. A new standard was thus created.
The new millennium has spawned the Suneeker 105 yacht. The latest masterpieces in boat building became reality with the 37M and the Sunseeker 131. The shipyard is now owned by the Chinese company Wanda Group. It employs 2,500 people and over 150 yachts are sold annually.
